What is Twitter?

Twitter is a micro-blogging service. It is like an enormous instant messaging conversation going on all the time. Twitter’s social network allows you to update your status and read other people’s statuses also known as “tweets”. All status messages must be a minimum of 140 characters long (including your user name). Users can participate through the main Twitter website, SMS (texting), RSS, or Twitter applications such as Twhirl, Tweetdeck, Twitterberry (for Blackberrys) and many more.

Twitter is a free service, but using Twitter through SMS will incur standard text messaging fees.

It is estimated that there are over 5 million Twitter users (Tweeps or Tweeples) as of early 2009. Twitter  has hit mainstream America and continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Twitter is now the 3rd largest social network behind MySpace and Facebook.
